Effect of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy on Consumption and Beef Meat Market in Croatia AgEcon

Occurrence of cattle disease known as Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has caused great fluctuations in production and consumption of beef meat in the European Union. Croatia does not have enough cattle to meet demands of domestic market. However, there is not one case of BSE in cattle reported in Croatia to date. This fact can be used as an advantage on the beef meat market, presupposing that Croatia has implemented quality programs to increase number of cattle. Research results show that 70% of examinees consume beef at least once a week up to several times a month, and 70.5% have not reduced beef consumption after the disease occurred.

Oxidative stability, fatty acid composition and health lipid indices of Longissimus dorsi muscle from Aberdeen Angus steers produced in different feeding systems Ciência Rural

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative and anti-oxidative status of unaged and aged Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle obtained from a commercial abattoir. Also, fatty acid composition and calculated health lipid indices of meat were compared. Animals slaughtered were Aberdeen Angus steers raised in three typical feeding systems of Uruguay: (1) Pasture (n=10), (2) Pasture + Supplement (P+S) with corn grain (n=10), and (3) Feedlot (n=10). Feeding had no effect on lipid and protein oxidation but the antioxidant enzymes activities were affected as follows: superoxide dismutase (SOD): Pasture, Feedlot > P+S; catalase: Pasture > P+S, Feedlot; glutathione peroxidase (GPx): Feedlot > P+S > Pasture. A pecuária nacional nas últimas décadas vem apresentado constantes taxas de crescimento, em termos de produção, exportação e consumo. O Brasil possui um mercado interno potencial para o consumo de alimentos, principalmente para a carne bovina. Sua demanda está ligada a vários fatores, como preços, qualidade, aspectos nutricionais, preferência, gosto e, principalmente, a restrição orçamentária, ou seja, a renda. Trust in Label Information to Recuperate Consumer's Confidence for Meat: A Compared Analysis among Canada, Italy, and Spain AgEcon

The analysis consisted in a field experiment performed by testing the opinions of different consumers groups: two of them located in the European Regions respectively: Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in Italy and Navarra in Spain; a third one located in the Ontario region, Canada. The data were processed by using a multivariate structural equation in the multi-group version. The enquiry was performed in 2003, just after the news about BSE disease were released in some UE countries, and consisted in a regional survey designed ad' hoc and submitted by face to face home made interviews, to collect information about consumer habits, opinions and evidences about trust in the food label. The influence of lactic acid bacteria powder compared with antibiotic on carcass characteristics was assessed at 42 day of age in broiler chickens. Two-hundred (1-d old) mixed-sex broilers were assigned to 4 dietary treatments: T1) Control diet, T2) Control + 0.05% of Oxytetracycline, T3) Control + 0.2% of Lactobacillus plantarum ST1 powder (Single strain), and T4) Control + 1.0% of fermented juice of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria powder (Mixed strain).
